It was a foregone conclusion that neo-Nazi groups would, after the death of Elie Wiesel jump into action mode to slime his memory. More common than Holocaust deniers are people who accuse Elie Wiesel of profiting from the Holocaust. In addition to fighting genocide in other places in the world and helping its victims.Wiesel had every right to speak about his own personal experiences, despite the fervent wishes of some very questionable people that he shut up.
Elie Wiesel spent his life fighting genocide and helping modern day survivors of new genocides such as in Rwanda and in Bosnia. In addition, Wiesel wrote books about biblical figures, chassidic rebbes and the world of his childhood that was wiped from the map of Europe. The man spoke with the authority of an eyewitness and of a scholar. Wiesel had earned the right to be heeded on the wide variety of topics about which he spoke.
If it were only neo Nazis and white supremacists that reviled Elie Wiesel, it would suffice to ignore them. Unfortunately, the Democratic Party is now home to a growing number of people who want Elie Wiesel, even in death, to just shut up.
Dorothy Reik, president of the Progressive Democrats of the Santa Monica Mountains and a member of the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee, wrote an email quoting a reference to Wiesel as a “Holocaust whore” and adding: “I had met people who made their livings from the holocaust [sic] but never to the extent that Wiesel did.”
It is possible to differ with Wiesel on individual issues without negating his general message. In retrospect, atrocities were committed in the Balkans not only by the Serbs, but by the Croats and Bosnians as well. Even the United Nations forces were involved in sex trafficking in the murky moral universe of Bosnia Herzegovina. If there is anyplace on earth where one might make a flawed judgment call, Bosnia Herzegovina would be a likely place.
It is chilling sign of our troubled times when the Democratic Party opens its doors to people who would mock, silence and marginalise people like Elie Wiesel. To a great extent, the Democratic Party is mainstreaming some very toxic ideas. It is time to hold the Democratic Party to its mission as a mainstream political party, and to sideline it until it corrects its dangerous moral drift.
