The United States and its European allies have had abysmal luck picking allies in the Muslim world. For aiding the Libyans who were fighting Muammar Gaddafi, we are now faced with an anti-American, anti western Islamist government in Libya. In many instances,militias in Syria that were supposedly allies in the fight against the Assad regime have gone over to Al Qaeda and to ISIS.The most famous recipient of American aid in the fight against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan is Osama bin Laden, who turned on his American benefactors with a vengeance.
The most reliable allies in the fight against ISIS are the Kurds, a national minority that extends across Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey. Historically, the Kurds have been repressed, used and sold out according to the demands of political expediency. Indeed, the underwhelming support shown by the Turkish government for the war against ISIS is probably related to its long-standing denial of the rights of its Kurdish population.
