In Defense of Netanyahu’s Remarks on Palestinians Holocaust Link

Binyamin Netanyahu has been thoroughly condemned for his recent remarks about Palestinians and the Holocaust, in which he is condemned for claiming that the Mufti of Jerusalem incited Hitler and the Nazis to murder Jews instead of simply deporting them. Contrary to the claims of critics, Netanyahu raises many legitimate questions.

One of the goals of the Nazis was to displace the British and the French in Iraq, Syria and what was then called Palestine. In order to do this, the Nazis displayed a cunning understanding of Arab hatred of Jews and the willingness of “the Arab street” to scapegoat Jews. In Iraq and in Palestine, German agents worked to incite the public against Jews, and to create movements in Arab countries such as Baathism that were modeled after Germany’s Nazis.

The German efforts to raise Jew hatred to a fever pitch were very successful. Most infamous of all the pogroms inspired by Nazi propaganda was the Farhud, a pogrom in Bagdad, Iraq that occurred on June 1, and 2, 1941 on the Jewish holiday of Shavuot in Iraq, when Jews were falsely accused of celebrating a British victory in a local battle with Arab nationalists. That particular pogrom was one of many in the Arab world that signalled the end of any welcome to Jews in the Arab world. This pogrom occurred well before the founding of the State of Israel.

Contrary to the campaign of misinformation about Netanyahu’s statements, there were times during the Holocaust that Jews were deported rather than murdered. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Hajj Amin al-Husayni not only visited Auschwitz but urged the Nazis to continue and to step up their campaign of extermination against the Jewish people. Although he did not originate the Final Solution, Hajj Amin al-Husayni  played a noteworthy role in driving out  a million Jews from Arab countries before and after the State of Israel was founded.

It is a myth that Arabs are secondary victims of the Holocaust in Europe. To the contrary, there are documented links between the Holocaust in Europe and the campaign to expel Jews from the Arab world.

Binyamin Netanyahu should not back down or apologise for his recent remarks. To the contrary, he should revisit this theme with more information for a public that is largely uninformed about links between Arab nationalism and Nazism.
