Shabbat Shalom Dear Readers on Chol HaMoed Sukkot 5776

Tsahal a

besyata We look forward to being able to beat our swords into ploughshares. Until the time comes, may G-d protect the Jewish people, the land of Israel and its defenders.

This week, Shabbat will be welcomed in Brooklyn at 6:19PM with candle lighting, which is 18 minutes before sunset. Since this Shabbat falls in the middle of Sukkot, the Torah reading of Exodus 33:12-34:26 is out of the normal sequence of Torah readings, since it falls out during a festival. The reading recounts G‑d telling Moses to carve new tablets to replace the set that Moshe had broken earlier. Although Moshe shaped the tablets, it was G-d’s engraving upon them. In the parsha, the thirteen attributes of divine mercy are read as well.

In addition, the parsha this week, as well as a supplementary reading from the book of Numbers list the various holidays and festivals of the Jewish year.

On the Chabad.org web site, you can look up the time Shabbat begins in your city. There are also worthwhile articles that can be printed out Aish.com.

Aish.com has an article on how to answer Christian missionaries. In an age when there is freedom of religion, the internet, as well as an open society, in which people of all faiths mingle freely, there are many opportunities for missionaries of all persuasions to promote their respective faiths. For believers, it is a challenge to educate oneself in one’s own faith.

This week’s haftorah, which is from Ezekiel (Yechezkel chapter 38, deals with the war between Israel and the two superpowers, Gog and Magog that will take place. It also describes in vivid terms the aftermath of the battle, in which weapons will be collected and destroyed. Part of the Haftorah reads in English as follows.

Then the inhabitants of the cities of Israel will go forth and make fires and heat up with the weapons, the bucklers, and the encompassing shields, the bows and the arrows and the handstaves and the spears, and burn them as fires for seven years.

May it be G-d’s will that the days quickly come when the nations will no longer seek to dismantle Israel either through a lightning strike or through an “easy” installment plan of taking it through territorial concessions.
