During the years when Russia and the Soviet Union were communist, America allowed and at times encouraged religious observance, while the Soviet Union officially encouraged atheism. In Russia today, Christianity has received its official recognition as the religion of the majority of Russia’s population. Its potential as a positive force and a part of Russia’s past has been recognised in a way that would have been unimaginable a generation ago.

In America, by contrast, traditional Christianity, as well as Judaism, have been pushed more and more to the margins. Simply stating that sex outside of marriage and same sex marriage are forbidden according to scripture is seen as inflammatory.

The following documentary from Russia Today portrays an Egyptian Christian village in which many men form the village who had gone to Libya were murdered. The documentary shows considerable respect to the families whose men became martyrs for their Christian faith. Such portrayals are hard, if not impossible to find in the American mainstream media. It seems that we are living in times when religious devotion is now more mainstream in Russia than it is in the US. It is time for American Christians and the American mainstream media to speak up for persecuted Christians as loudly as do the Russians.

In these strange times, when will America find its voice and its heart?
