Despite the best efforts of Romania’s communist government, the popularity of the Beatles,the Rolling Stones and other rock groups from the west was widespread in Romania. The band Phoenix started got its start performing cover versions of Beatles’ songs. When the communist government in Romania passed a law that all pop music had to be in Romanian. the ended up bringing out the best in Phoenix which drew upon Romanian folklore and musical traditions in its musical compositions. Even with their changes in style, they still managed to flaunt their ideological lack of conformity with long hair and other elements indicative of a lack of communist zeal.
