It is very common for candidates to decry “negative campaigning”, especially it the ads directed against them seem to be working. It is tempting to look back to our illustrious forefathers to see the high road that they took during political campaigns.

You might be surprised to know that campaigns back then made todays “attack ads” look like chit-chat at a high society tea party. (Perhaps I should not have mentioned tea parties.) Following are “19th century campaign ads” in which every word was actually spoken or written by America’s founding fathers and historical figures.
