American Sniper, a film that is reviled by leftist pundits, has been doing amazingly well in movie theaters, has grossed 80 Million dollars in its opening weekend. American Sniper tells the story of Chris Kyle, whose marksmanship saved countless lives on the battle field.

Selma, by contrast has been a flop, in good part because of its historically dishonest portrayal of President Lyndon Johnson as an obstructionist rather than a facilitator of civil rights. An honest portrayal of Johnson would show a man who simultaneously struggled for the advancement of America’s minorities who was nevertheless uninhibited about referring to them in a most offensive manner. The History Learning Site reports as follows.

Johnson, like Eisenhower, thought civil rights legislation would try to force people to change and lead to violence. Despite this politically correct (in Southern eyes) action, Johnson was behind the scenes working to get black farmers and schoolchildren equal treatment in his congressional district, believing small, but real developments would be better than ground-breaking legislation. In 1938 Johnson secured federal funding for housing in Austin, Texas to benefit Mexican, African American and White slum dwellers. Johnson softened this for racist southerners by stating “This country won’t have to worry about isms [communism and fascism] when it gives its people a decent, clean place to live and a job. They’ll believe in the government.”

Johnson was, it seems torn between kind instincts and political expediency. Such a portrayal would make for an intriguing film but would not lend itself well to ideological polarisation or racial guilt trips.

America’s cultural preferences have always confounded America’s wannabee cultural trends setters, who do a poor job of concealing their desire to dissolve the people and to elect another.
