A 16 year old Turkish high school student faces up to four years in jail for insulting Turkey’s President Recip Erdogan, a man who has stated that democracy is like a bus that one takes to one’s destination before getting off.

On paper, Turkey remains a democracy, despite the attempts of Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party to turn it into an Islamist theocracy.

Turkey is deeply divided, not only between its Turkish majority and its Kurdish minority, but between different branches of Islam adhered to by its population. In addition, the secularist philosophy of Kemalism, named after modern Turkey’s founder Kemal Ataturk, still has millions of adherents. Before Recip Erdogan, there was a clear separation of mosque and state in Turkey. Today, under Erdogan, this is changing, to the detriment not only of secular Turks, but of religious Muslims whose practices do not meet the standards of Islamists who are in power.

The case of the anonymous 16 year old who was arrested for criticising Recip Erdogan will be watched closely not only in Turkey, but in the European nations with which Turkey seeks to establish closer ties.
Putting a sixteen year old through the criminal justice system in a country known for brutality in its prison system is not a step that should be regarded lightly. Recip Erdogan may want to get off the bus he calls democracy. Many Turks do not want to get off with him.

Erdogan is a dictator. He attacks on his own country. He makes politically arrests.
