An Insider View of Media Bias

Anyone who regularly watches a network, or reads a newspaper is often able to discern the bias in news reporting. Sharryl Attkinson is a former reporter for CBS News. From her time behind the scenes, she is able to verify the obvious, that there is indeed a calculated effort in the mainstream media. Reason.com, in a recent article, discusses her new book “Stonewalled”

A rare honour for a journalist is to add a word to our language. Ms. Attkinson has contributed “controversialise” to our lexicon. The word refers to the politicisation of factual truth, to take a body of fact and to turn it into a partisan political dispute. Ms. Attkinson makes the case that Benghazi, “Fast and Furious” and other news events are made to look like something that only opponents of the Obama administration care about. By stonewalling on events that could cast the administration in a bad light, enough time is allowed to elapse that corruption can be dismissed as “ancient history”

What is most interesting is where Ms. Attkinson places the blame for media bias. She makes the case that stories are shaped at management level, and that reporters are frequently told to develop stories in a manner that would lead to preordained conclusions. This shifts the spotlight, and forces reporters to support conclusions that they might not arrive at on their own.

Ms. Attkinson describes herself as a “political agnostic”, which evokes images of an honest searcher for truth. Her insider’s voice is a welcome contribution to discussions of media bias.
