Remembering WBCN [Audio and Video]

As a youngest child, I picked up my musical and entertainment tastes from my older siblings. It seemed I was surrounded by “bubble gum rock” and that anything hip or avant-garde was far beyond the reach of an early teen in the suburbs. Then, I got an FM radio, and access to WBCN. A lot of its rock music was way too hard-core for me, but I liked its politics and the style of its announcers. Back in the late 60’s and early 70’s, radio created the possibility of maintaining a sense of belonging if you lived out of your demographic. A glowing radio in a dark room, along with the disembodied voices of radio announcers created a sense of intimacy. The announcers looked like how you imagined them.  My sense of belonging came from a combination of WBCN, radio Havana and the BBC.

Today, with the internet, I can surround myself with Italian pop music from the 70’s East German rock music and Andean music in Quechua on some days and Quebec pop music, American rock and Ernst Busch on other random days.Back then, reaching out for such diverse voices took real effort.

Although my politics have evolved towards the right, I still look back on BCN with fondness. Following are some resources for a WBCN nostalgia fix. Hopefully, there will be more in the future.
