When I was a left-wing teen, the John Birch Society was the premier right wing organisation. in the US. According to them, Eisenhower was a communist dupe, and the US was being brought down by a communist conspiracy. Because of their advocacy of conspiracy theories, they were dismissed by the mainstream media as “kooks”. Because they opposed the civil rights movement as another communist conspiracy, accusations of bigotry clung to the organisation.
There were kernels of truth the message of the John Birch Society. Yes, drugs and promiscuous behavior are promoted in music. The John Birch Society was an early opponent of sex education. A lot of the explicit sex instructions and advocacy that are common place today in sex ed sounded down right wacky back in the 50’s and 60’s when they were darkly predicted by the John Birch Society.
Although some of the warnings of this far right organisation were indeed prophetic, their disposition towards conspiracy theory and their demonisation of opponents is probably what marginalised them.
So who was John Birch? Birch was a military intelligence officer during World War Two. He was also a Baptist Missionary who was fluent in Mandarin Chinese. He took a literal translation of the Christian scriptures very seriously, and in college filed heresy charges against some of his professors. Would he have approved of the organisation that bore his name? The following documentary is the story of his life.
Here also is a link to an article by a child who grew up in the John Birch Society. I have read similar accounts from children of leftists who likewise rejected their parent’s politics. The moral of the story seems to be “Be kind to your children.Because rejecting your politics can turn out to be their sweet revenge.”
