Beverly Perdue took an oath to uphold the laws of North Carolina and the United States of America when she took office as the Democratic Governor of North Carolina. Her words, caught on tape show a rampant disrespect for these very laws that she swore to uphold. Although she made the ludicrous claim that she was joking, Governor Perdue, citing the bad state of the US economy, called for suspension of Congressional elections until the economy stabilises.
The United States had elections on schedule during two world wars in the last century. The only crisis that would be created by having congressional elections during a deep recession is that the incumbent party, rightly or wrongly will catch blame for the bad economy. When George Bush was getting spanked because of the bad economy, many Democrats were delighted at the opportunity to blame the Republicans. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, North Carolina’s governor actually suggested that elections be suspended for Congress, rather than risk having the Democrats pay a price at the polls.
The Governor’s words, caught on tape were as follows.
“I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that.”
Listen to the tape. Governor Perdue was deadly serious. That is downright scary. Governor Perdue has flunked a basic lesson in American democracy. Don’t mess with elections. Governor Perdue should resign immediately, to send a message to any other politicians not to mess with our constitution, or even think of doing so.
