The European Union of Jewish Students sent a very unusual representative to speak on its behalf at the United Nations. Amram Hussain spoke on March 21 as a member and representative of the EUJS. He spoke eloquently against the disproportionate emphasis upon Israel in deliberations upon human rights violations. He also spoke out against the demonisation of Israel and the non recognition of Israel by many nations. He attributed a rise in world Jew hatred to this incongruous and politically driven emphasis. His speech was a welcome reminder that there are people n the Muslim world who wish Israel and Jews well. Somehow, he has managed to derive a message of tolerance and coexistence from his faith tradition. In a time that the Koran is being publicly burned, it is worth remembering that there are Muslims like Amram Hussain who wish Jews and Israel well. There are probably many more such Muslims who feel as Amram Hussein does but are afraid to speak out in the intimidating climate of today’s Islamic world. Amram Hussain deserves credit for his courage.
