An anime cartoon in which rabbits rise up and attack the government has been banned by Chinese authorities. The cartoon starts off with rabbit babies being poisoned by infant formula, an obvious slap at a scandal in which  six children were killed from poisoned infant formula. The video features the rabbits being fired upon, clubbed and harangued by ominous looking creatures with military equipment. The slogans used are clearly drawn from government propaganda. Now that the video is on Youtube, it is being viewed all over the world. In the end of the video, the rabbits themselves turn on their oppressors.

The video’s message is clearly a warning shot to communist authorities. Don’t push us too far. By using the animal that symbolises the upcoming Year of the Rabbit, this warning takes on an immediacy it would not otherwise have.

The cartoon is presented below
